Biomarkers

Chlamydia
Chlamydia is a common sexually transmitted infection (STI) that can lead to serious health complications if left untreated. It is highly contagious, so even if you are unaware of an infection, you may unknowingly expose your sexual partners to significant risk. Timely diagnosis and treatment are essential to prevent long-term health issues and the spread of the infection.
Trichomoniasis
Trichomoniasis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) caused by the parasite Trichomonas vaginalis. It is primarily spread through unprotected sexual contact. In many cases, the infection may not show noticeable symptoms in males or, to a lesser extent, in females. However, for women, common symptoms may include vaginal discharge, bleeding after sex, and itching or irritation in the vaginal area.
Syphilis
Syphilis is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), caused by a bacterial infection. It is primarily transmitted through sexual contact with an infected person or from mother to fetus during pregnancy (congenital syphilis).

Symptoms typically appear about three weeks after exposure and can vary significantly over time. In some cases, symptoms may disappear temporarily, making detection challenging. However, without treatment, the disease can progress to more severe stages, causing complications that affect various organs in the body.

Congenital syphilis can lead to serious complications for the unborn child, including developmental issues and even death. Early detection is crucial, as syphilis is diagnosed through a test that identifies antibodies produced by the body in response to the infection.

Since syphilis symptoms may subside before the disease reaches its later stages, it is important to seek medical attention even if symptoms seem to disappear.

Gonorrhoea
Gonorrhoea is caused by the bacteria Neisseria gonorrhoeae. This test detects the presence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae DNA in a urine sample, identifying even trace amounts of the bacteria’s genetic material. Our test is highly sensitive and can accurately detect very low levels of the bacteria’s DNA.
HIV
HIV-1 and HIV-2 are two distinct strains of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). HIV-1 is the most prevalent and is responsible for the majority of HIV infections globally. In contrast, HIV-2 is rarer and primarily found in West Africa. Both strains can lead to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), a severe condition that weakens the immune system. As a result, individuals with AIDS become more vulnerable to opportunistic infections and illnesses, which can be life-threatening if left untreated.
Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B antibodies are proteins produced by the immune system in response to an infection with the hepatitis B virus. There are two main types of hepatitis B antibodies: HBsAb (hepatitis B surface antibodies) and HBeAb (hepatitis B e antibodies). HBsAb, also known as surface antibodies, develop after a person has been exposed to the virus, and they typically remain in the body for life. The presence of HBsAb indicates immunity to the virus, providing protection against future hepatitis B infections.

Are STI tests reliable?

Yes, STI tests are generally reliable, but their accuracy can be influenced by several factors, including:

-Not following the instructions carefully
-Using an expired test kit
-Testing too soon after potential exposure to an STI

If you’re uncertain about the accuracy of your test, it’s always a good idea to get retested for peace of mind.

Why should I take an STI test?

There are several important reasons why you should consider getting an STI test, even if you don’t have any symptoms. Regular testing helps ensure your health and the health of your partner(s). Here’s why you might want to get tested:

Unprotected sex: If you’ve had unprotected sex, you may be at risk, even if you don’t experience any symptoms.

Starting a new sexual relationship: Before beginning a new relationship, it’s a good idea to get tested to ensure both partners are STI-free.

STI diagnosis: If you or your partner have been diagnosed with an STI, it’s important to get tested to check for any other potential infections.

Symptoms of an STI: If you notice any unusual symptoms such as sores, discharge, or pain, it’s essential to get tested for possible infections.

Pregnancy: If you’re pregnant, getting tested for certain STIs—such as HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B—can protect both your health and the health of your baby. Some STIs can cause serious complications during pregnancy and delivery.

Remember, even if you’re symptom-free, it’s always a good idea to get tested regularly to stay proactive about your sexual health.

What if my results show that I’m outside the normal range?

If your results fall outside the normal range and raise concerns, it is crucial that you contact your GP or emergency services immediately by calling 111 or 999. Please remember: if you feel unwell or are concerned about your health, do not wait for test results—reach out to emergency services as soon as possible.
