Biomarkers

Uric Acid
Uric acid is a waste product formed from purines, which are chemical compounds naturally produced by the body and also found in foods such as anchovies, dried beans, beer, and wine. The kidneys filter uric acid from the blood and eliminate it through urine. However, excessive levels of uric acid can lead to the formation of crystals in bodily tissues, causing conditions like gout. Gout is a form of arthritis that typically causes severe pain in the joints, particularly in the fingers, toes, wrists, and ankles.

Uric acid levels can also increase as a result of cancer treatments. Conversely, abnormally low levels of uric acid may indicate liver or kidney disease.

Information

Why take the test?
A uric acid test may be recommended by your doctor if they suspect elevated levels of uric acid in your blood. This test is also commonly used for individuals:

Undergoing cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
Experiencing frequent kidney stones.

Additional Information
A uric acid blood test helps diagnose gout and monitor its treatment. It can also identify individuals at risk of developing gout, a type of arthritis caused by high levels of uric acid in the blood. The test is often used to track the effectiveness of medications prescribed to treat gout.

The test involves drawing a blood sample from a vein in your arm, which is then sent to a lab for analysis. There are no significant risks associated with the uric acid blood test.

Statistics on Uric Acid

High uric acid levels can be caused by conditions such as multiple myeloma, metastatic cancer, leukemia, or a diet high in purines. Uric acid levels are generally considered high when they exceed 6 mg/dL in females and 7 mg/dL in males. Additionally, low urine uric acid levels may be indicative of kidney disease or chronic alcohol use.

%

UK Gout rate rises by 30%
According to reports from the Daily Mirror, nearly 1 in 40 people in the UK are affected by gout, making Britain the “gout capital” of Europe. The research reveals that approximately 29.6% of the population suffers from this condition.

%

of people suffers from skin irritation
Skin rashes, though rare, can be highly troublesome and affect around 5% of gout patients. These rashes can present a serious issue, especially for individuals with poorly functioning kidneys. It is recommended that those experiencing skin rashes consult their GP promptly.

Experts Opinion

Uric acid is commonly used to diagnose gout and monitor its treatment. Elevated levels of uric acid can lead to kidney disease and increase the risk of kidney stone formation. Additionally, this test can help assess the risk of preeclampsia during pregnancy.

FAQs

What is a normal range of uric acid?
The normal uric acid range in the blood is typically between 3.5 and 7.2 mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter). However, this range may vary slightly depending on the specific laboratory conducting the test.
What causes high uric acid levels in the body?
Several factors can contribute to high uric acid levels in the body. A common cause is consuming foods high in purines, such as organ meats, seafood, and beer. Other contributing factors include obesity, certain medical conditions like diabetes, and medications such as diuretics. High uric acid levels can also result from a reduced ability of the kidneys to eliminate it efficiently.
Where do I send my sample?
Once you’ve collected your sample, you’ll receive a prepaid return label to send it back to our lab for analysis. We will also provide detailed instructions via email to guide you through the return process, ensuring a smooth and easy experience.
What do I need to do before my test? i.e. fast, no drinking, etc
If your test requires fasting or limiting alcohol intake, we will send you personalized instructions via email once your order is placed. However, most tests can be completed without the need for fasting.
When will I get my results/how will I receive my results?
Your results are typically processed within 2–3 working days. If your sample is sent over the weekend (which we do not recommend), you can expect your results within 2–3 days starting from Monday. Once your results and personalized report are ready, you’ll receive an email notification to log in to the Welzo online platform and view them.
What level of uric acid is dangerous?
While there isn’t a specific “dangerous” level of uric acid, levels that are significantly above or below the normal range can indicate potential health concerns. Elevated uric acid levels may lead to conditions like gout or kidney stones, while low levels could suggest kidney or liver issues. Your healthcare provider will evaluate your results in the context of your medical history and other relevant factors.
What happens if uric acid is high?
High uric acid levels in the blood can lead to gout, a type of arthritis that causes intense pain and inflammation, typically in the joints of the toes, ankles, or knees. Over time, if left untreated, elevated uric acid can also result in the formation of kidney stones and potentially cause kidney damage. To manage high uric acid levels, treatment often includes medications that help lower uric acid in the bloodstream and lifestyle changes, such as dietary adjustments and increased hydration.
What if my results show that I’m outside the normal range?
If your test results fall outside the normal range and raise concerns, it is important to contact your GP or seek medical advice immediately. In case of urgent symptoms or if you’re feeling unwell, please reach out to emergency services by calling 111 or 999. Note: It is your responsibility to follow up with a healthcare provider for further guidance and treatment, even if you have concerns before receiving your results.
