The Female Hormone Blood Test provides an accurate assessment of hormone levels in the female body. It is commonly used to monitor hormone therapy, diagnose conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and menopause, and track overall hormonal health. This test requires only a simple finger-prick blood sample, making it convenient and minimally invasive.
For the most accurate results, it is recommended to collect the sample:
7 days before the start of your next period, or
21 days after the start of your last period.
Following these guidelines ensures precise hormone level readings tailored to your menstrual cycle.
- Luteinizing Hormone (LH)
- Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH)
- Testosterone
- Oestradiol
- Free Thyroxine (FT4)
- Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
- Free Triiodothyronine (FT3)

Biomarkers
Luteinising Hormone (LH)
Luteinising Hormone (LH) is produced by the pituitary gland and plays a critical role in sexual function and reproduction. In women, LH regulates the menstrual cycle and triggers ovulation by stimulating the release of an egg from the ovaries. LH levels rise significantly before ovulation, a phase known as the LH surge. Monitoring LH levels is crucial in assessing female fertility, as imbalances may lead to fertility challenges.
Testosterone
Free Thyroxine (FT4)
FT4 or free thyroxine is one of the two critical hormones produced by the thyroid gland. While it is produced in greater abundance as compared to FT3, it is thought of as a reservoir for FT3 whenever the body needs and this leads to conversion of FT4 into FT3. Most of the thyroxine is not attached to a protein and the Menopause blood test helps to identify if there’s a deficiency/excess of the hormone to detect thyroid related ailments.
Oestradiol
The Oestradiol Blood Test measures the levels of oestradiol, a key hormone, in the blood. Women aged 50 and above, approaching menopause, typically have the lowest oestradiol levels. This decline can lead to symptoms such as hot flashes, night sweats, mood swings, infertility issues, and an increased risk of osteoporosis. Hormonal imbalances can significantly impact both physical and mental well-being.
The test is beneficial for men concerned about abnormal breast tissue growth and for women experiencing irregular menstrual cycles, helping identify underlying issues. Along with the test results, we provide expert comments from our Certified Doctors to guide further action.
Follicle-Stimulating Hormone
Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH), produced by the pituitary gland, is crucial for sexual and reproductive health. As one of the two primary gonadotropic hormones (the other being Luteinising Hormone or LH), FSH regulates ovarian function in women, stimulating the growth and maturation of ovarian follicles. It also plays a role in oestradiol production, which is essential for reproductive health.
Due to its pivotal role in female fertility, FSH is a key component of Welzo’s advanced female fertility home test, designed to provide valuable insights into women’s reproductive health.
Free Triiodothyronine (FT3)
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), also known as thyrotropin, is secreted by the pituitary gland and plays a key role in regulating thyroid function. By stimulating the thyroid gland to produce hormones like T3 (triiodothyronine) and T4 (thyroxine), TSH helps maintain metabolic balance in the body.
Abnormal TSH levels can indicate thyroid disorders such as hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) or hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). These conditions may lead to symptoms such as weight changes, anxiety, palpitations, disrupted sleep, and irregular menstrual cycles. Hypothyroidism often presents with symptoms that overlap with menopause, making accurate diagnosis essential.
Testing TSH levels is crucial for identifying thyroid imbalances and guiding effective treatment to restore overall health and hormonal stability.
Information
Why take the test?
The Female Hormone Blood Test measures the levels of key hormones in your blood, helping to identify whether persistent symptoms—such as hair loss, weight gain, or irregular menstrual cycles—are linked to an underlying hormonal imbalance.
Many women experience conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) or Polycystic Ovary Disease (PCOD), which can disrupt ovulation and affect fertility. These hormonal disorders may also contribute to mood changes, including anxiety and depression.
This test is invaluable for diagnosing the cause of irregular periods, assessing thyroid function, and evaluating fertility hormone levels. By providing insights into your hormonal health, it helps guide appropriate treatment and supports overall well-being.
Additional Information
Key hormones typically tested include oestrogen, progesterone, and testosterone, alongside others like luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH).
Preparation for the Test
Your doctor may provide specific instructions to prepare for the test, such as:
Avoiding birth control pills or other hormonal medications for at least two weeks before the test.
Abstaining from alcohol for 24 hours before the test.
Fasting (refraining from eating or drinking) for at least eight hours before the test.
Receiving Results
The results typically take a few days to a week to process. Your doctor will review the findings with you and explain their implications for your health.
Have you been experiencing symptoms such as hair loss, weight changes, irregular periods, or mood disturbances? These may be signs of a hormonal imbalance that a blood test could help diagnose.
Have you been feeling any of these symptoms lately?

FAQs
What is a normal range in a female hormone blood test?
Oestradiol: 41.4 – 159 pmol/L
FSH: 1.5 – 12.4 IU/L
LH: 1.7 – 8.6 IU/L
Progesterone: <0.47 nmol/L
Testosterone: 0.29 – 1.67 nmol/L
If your hormone levels fall outside the normal range, it doesn’t necessarily indicate a hormone-related condition. However, it may suggest the need for further testing.
Please note that normal ranges may vary slightly depending on the laboratory conducting the tests. The above ranges are based on those used by our partner laboratory to analyze these biomarkers.
When should you test your female hormones?
Irregular or missed periods
Heavy or light menstrual bleeding
Difficulty conceiving (infertility)
Mood swings
Hot flashes
Night sweats
Weight gain
Hair loss
Vaginal dryness
Hormone testing may also be advised if you are taking medications that can impact hormone levels, such as birth control pills or menopausal hormone therapy. Consulting with your doctor can help determine if a hormone test is appropriate for your symptoms or medication regimen.

What's included in a female hormone panel?
Oestradiol: A test for the primary form of oestrogen in the body, essential for regulating the menstrual cycle and reproductive health.
FSH (Follicle Stimulating Hormone): A test that measures FSH levels, which stimulate the ovaries to produce eggs.
LH (Luteinising Hormone): A test for LH, which triggers ovulation, the release of an egg from the ovary.
Progesterone: A test for progesterone, the hormone responsible for preparing the uterine lining for pregnancy.
These tests provide crucial insights into reproductive health and hormone balance.
