Getting Tested
If you think you might have chlamydia, it’s important to get tested as soon as possible. Testing is available at your local healthcare provider’s office, clinics, or Planned Parenthood health centers.
There are two main types of chlamydia tests:
Urine Test: A simple urine sample is tested for the presence of chlamydia bacteria.
Swab Test: A sample of discharge is collected from the vagina or penis and tested for the infection.
Both tests are quick, easy, and typically done in the privacy of your healthcare provider’s office. Results are usually available within a few days.
Treatment
If your test result is positive, don’t worry—chlamydia is easily treatable with antibiotics. Your doctor will prescribe a course of antibiotics (typically for 7-10 days), and it’s essential to complete the full course, even if you start feeling better before finishing the medication.
You should avoid sexual activity until you’ve completed the entire course of antibiotics to ensure the infection is fully cleared.
Why Testing Matters
Chlamydia is often asymptomatic, meaning many people don’t realize they have it. Regular testing is recommended, especially for sexually active individuals, as early detection and treatment can prevent serious health problems. If left untreated, chlamydia can cause permanent damage, including:
Infertility: In women, it can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) and infertility.
Complications in Newborns: If a pregnant woman is infected, the bacteria can be transmitted to the baby during childbirth, potentially leading to serious infections.
Other Health Issues: Untreated chlamydia can also cause complications such as arthritis.
Talking to Your Partners
If you’re diagnosed with chlamydia, it’s important to inform your current and past sexual partners so they can get tested and treated. Untreated infections can lead to further health problems and ongoing transmission.
Regular annual testing for chlamydia is advised for sexually active individuals, and it’s a simple, essential step in maintaining your sexual health.

FAQs
What happens if you test positive for chlamydia?
Why should you get tested for chlamydia?
If you are sexually active, it’s important to get tested for chlamydia and other STIs regularly—ideally every year or more often if you have multiple partners.
If you experience symptoms like pain or burning during urination, or unusual discharge from the penis or vagina, see a doctor as soon as possible and get tested.
Where do I send my sample?
What do I need to do before my test? i.e. fast, no drinking, etc
When will I get my results/how will I receive my results?
How soon can you detect chlamydia?
Chlamydia can typically be detected within a week of exposure using most tests.
If you experience symptoms such as burning during urination or unusual discharge from the penis or vagina, it’s important to see a doctor and get tested right away.
How do tests detect chlamydia?
NAATs are the most accurate and sensitive tests for chlamydia. They can be performed using urine samples or swabs from the urethra in men, or from the cervix, vagina, or rectum in women.
ELISAs are less sensitive and specific than NAATs but can also be done using urine samples.
What if my results show that I’m outside the normal range?
