Biomarkers

Free Thyroxine (T4)
Thyroxine (T4) is a crucial hormone responsible for regulating metabolism, growth, and energy levels in the body. By testing the levels of thyroxine, we can assess the function of the thyroid gland. Abnormal levels of thyroxine—whether too high or too low—can indicate thyroid dysfunction, and different treatments are available depending on whether the thyroid is underactive (hypothyroidism) or overactive (hyperthyroidism).
Free tri-iodothyronine (T3)
FT3, or free triiodothyronine, is one of the two key hormones produced by the thyroid gland. Despite making up a smaller portion compared to its counterpart, FT4, FT3 plays a more significant role in thyroid health. Both its deficiency and excess can lead to various thyroid-related issues due to its stronger physiological effects. A menopause blood test measures the level of FT3 that is not bound to proteins, providing valuable insights into thyroid function and overall hormonal balance.
Thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb)
Thyroid peroxidase (TPO) is an enzyme responsible for converting the inactive thyroid hormone T4 into the active form, T3. The TPO antibody (TPOAb) test detects the presence of antibodies that may be attacking the thyroid gland, potentially impairing its function.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D is a crucial nutrient that supports several vital functions in your body, including maintaining bone and muscle health. It can be obtained from food, supplements, and fortified products. Insufficient vitamin D levels may lead to conditions like osteoporosis and muscle weakness. The typical range for vitamin D levels is 20 to 50 ng/mL. If your levels are low, we may recommend vitamin D supplements or encourage the consumption of vitamin D-fortified foods to help restore balance.
Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)
TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone), also known as thyrotropin, is produced by the pituitary gland, which is located at the base of the brain. It plays a key role in regulating thyroid function and can help diagnose conditions like hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Both an excess or deficiency of TSH can cause a variety of symptoms, including weight changes, anxiety, palpitations, disrupted sleep, and irregular menstrual cycles. Hypothyroidism, in particular, shares many symptoms with menopause, such as fatigue and mood changes, making it important to differentiate between the two conditions for proper treatment.
Thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb)
The thyroglobulin protein (TgAb) is produced by the thyroid gland and plays a crucial role in the synthesis of thyroid hormones T3 and T4, which help regulate metabolism, growth, and mood. The test measures the level of antibodies the body has produced in response to thyroglobulin. Elevated antibody levels can indicate thyroid disorders or autoimmune conditions.
Ferritin
Ferritin is a protein responsible for storing iron in the body. Iron plays a crucial role in supplying oxygen to muscles, enabling them to function effectively and generate the energy they need. Ferritin releases iron when required and is primarily stored within the body’s cells, with the liver being the most common storage site. Monitoring ferritin levels is essential to ensure adequate iron storage, as insufficient ferritin can lead to rapid depletion of iron in the body, potentially impairing various functions.
Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble nutrient found naturally in various foods and available through supplements. It is essential for the production of red blood cells, which transport oxygen throughout the body. Additionally, vitamin B12 supports the development and proper functioning of the nervous system, playing a key role in maintaining overall health.

Additional Insight from Dr Sameer Nakedar, MBBS, MRCGP, PGCert
“Certain vitamins and minerals play a crucial role in supporting thyroid function, so ensuring you maintain optimal levels is important. However, abnormal levels of specific vitamins can lead to symptoms that may mimic thyroid disorders. Understanding your vitamin and mineral levels is essential for identifying or ruling out potential causes of these symptoms.

The advanced check also includes inflammatory markers, which are important in diagnosing autoimmune-related thyroid disorders. In such cases, the immune system may be malfunctioning, leading to thyroid disease as a result of autoimmune issues.”

Statistics

%

of the UK’s population has Hypothyroidism
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) reports that hypothyroidism affects 5% of individuals over the age of 60. The data also indicates that women are 5 to 10 times more likely to be affected by this condition than men.

%

of the population in the UK have clinically detectable goitres or thyroid nodules
According to the NICE report on the risks associated with thyroid dysfunction, most individuals with a non-malignant enlarged thyroid gland and normal thyroid function typically do not require treatment.

Experts Opinion

“A basic thyroid function test helps determine whether your thyroid is functioning normally, is overactive, or underactive. An advanced test goes a step further, including inflammatory markers to provide a more comprehensive assessment. In some cases, thyroid disorders are linked to autoimmune diseases, where the immune system mistakenly attacks the body’s own tissues, disrupting normal thyroid function.”

FAQs

What is the normal range of a thyroid blood test?

The normal range for thyroid blood tests can vary based on the specific test being performed. However, general reference ranges are as follows:

T4 (Thyroxine): 4 to 11 micrograms per deciliter (mcg/dL)

T3 (Triiodothyronine): 0.6 to 1.8 micrograms per deciliter (mcg/dL)

TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone): 0.4 to 4.0 milli-international units per liter (mIU/L)

How is an advanced thyroid test different from a regular thyroid test?
An advanced thyroid test measures both T3 and T4 hormone levels in your blood, providing a more comprehensive assessment of thyroid function. This test can help diagnose thyroid conditions and determine their specific type. In contrast, a standard thyroid test typically measures only one of these hormones, usually T4, offering a more limited evaluation.
Where do I send my sample?

You will receive a free return label to send your health test samples back to our lab for analysis. Clear instructions, including return details, will be provided via email to ensure a smooth and hassle-free process.

What do I need to do before my test? i.e. fast, no drinking, etc

If fasting or limiting alcohol intake is required before your blood test, we will send you personalized instructions via email after your order is placed. However, most tests can be taken without the need for fasting.

When will I get my results/how will I receive my results?

Results are typically processed within 2–3 working days. If a sample is sent over the weekend (which we do not recommend), you will receive your results within 2–3 days from the following Monday. Once your results and personalized report are ready, you will receive an email notification with instructions to log in to the Welzo online platform and view your results.

What does a full thyroid panel include?
A comprehensive thyroid panel measures levels of thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). These tests are essential for diagnosing thyroid disorders and identifying the specific type of thyroid condition present.
How are thyroid levels checked?
The most common way to assess thyroid function is through blood tests. The primary tests used to diagnose thyroid issues include those that measure levels of thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). A T4 test measures the amount of thyroxine in your bloodstream, while a T3 test measures triiodothyronine levels.

Another key test is the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) test. TSH is produced by the pituitary gland and plays a crucial role in regulating the production of T3 and T4 by the thyroid.

If your TSH levels are elevated, it may indicate that your thyroid is not producing enough T3 and T4, which can suggest hypothyroidism. Conversely, low TSH levels may signal that your thyroid is overactive, producing excessive T3 and T4, which could be indicative of hyperthyroidism.

In some cases, your doctor may recommend additional tests, such as a thyroid scan or thyroid antibody tests, to further investigate thyroid function and diagnose specific conditions.

How do I know if I have a cortisol imbalance? What if my results show that I’m outside the normal range?

If your results fall outside the normal range and raise concerns, it is crucial that you contact your GP or emergency services immediately by calling 111 or 999. Please remember: if you feel unwell or are concerned about your health, do not wait for test results—reach out to emergency services as soon as possible.
