Biomarkers

Free Thyroxine (T4)
Thyroxine (T4) is a crucial hormone that plays a key role in regulating metabolism, supporting growth, and maintaining energy levels. Our tests measure thyroxine levels in the body to assess thyroid function. Depending on whether the thyroid is underactive or overactive, different treatment options are available to address these imbalances.
Free tri-iodothyronine (T3)
Free tri-iodothyronine (FT3) is one of the two essential hormones produced by the thyroid gland. Despite being present in smaller amounts compared to free thyroxine (FT4), FT3 has a more significant impact on thyroid-related health issues. A menopause blood test measures the levels of unbound (free) FT3 to provide insights into thyroid function and overall hormonal balance.
Thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb)
Thyroid peroxidase (TPOAb) is an enzyme involved in thyroid hormone production, playing a key role in the conversion of T4 into the active hormone T3. The TPO test checks for antibodies that may attack the thyroid gland, potentially impairing its normal function.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D is a vital nutrient essential for various functions in the body, including maintaining healthy bones and muscles. It can be obtained through certain foods, supplements, and fortified products. Insufficient vitamin D levels can lead to conditions such as osteoporosis or muscle weakness. Optimal vitamin D levels range between 20 and 50 ng/mL. If your levels are low, we may recommend vitamin D supplements or incorporating more vitamin D-fortified foods into your diet.
Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH)
Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH), also known as thyrotropin, is produced by the pituitary gland in the brain and plays a key role in regulating thyroid function. Measuring TSH levels helps diagnose conditions like hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Imbalances in TSH secretion—either excessive or insufficient—can cause symptoms such as weight loss, anxiety, palpitations, disrupted sleep patterns, and irregular menstrual cycles. Hypothyroidism, in particular, often shares overlapping symptoms with menopause, making accurate diagnosis essential.
Thyroglobulin antibodies (TgAb)
Thyroglobulin (TgAb) is a protein produced by the thyroid gland that plays a key role in the production of hormones T3 and T4, which regulate metabolism, growth, and mood stability. A thyroglobulin antibody test measures the levels of antibodies the body has produced in response to thyroglobulin, helping to assess potential thyroid dysfunction or autoimmune conditions.
Ferritin
Ferritin is a protein that stores iron in the body, playing a vital role in ensuring muscles receive the oxygen needed for energy and proper function. Stored primarily in the liver, ferritin releases iron when required. Measuring ferritin levels helps assess whether the body has sufficient iron reserves. Low levels can indicate depleted iron stores, potentially leading to deficiencies.
Vitamin B12
Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin found naturally in foods and available as a supplement. It plays a crucial role in the production of red blood cells, which transport oxygen throughout the body, and supports the development and function of the nervous system.

Additional Insight from Dr Sameer Nakedar, MBBS, MRCGP, PGCert
Certain vitamins and minerals play a key role in supporting thyroid function, so maintaining optimal levels can be beneficial. However, abnormal levels of specific vitamins and minerals can lead to symptoms that mimic thyroid disorders. Monitoring these levels can help identify or rule out potential causes of these symptoms.
The advanced check also includes inflammatory markers, as thyroid disorders can sometimes be linked to autoimmune conditions. In these cases, the immune system may not be functioning properly, potentially leading to thyroid dysfunction as a result of autoimmune issues.

Statistics

%

of the UK’s population has Hypothyroidism

According to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), hypothyroidism affects approximately 5% of individuals over the age of 60. The data also indicate that women are 5 to 10 times more likely to be affected than men.

%

of the population in the UK have clinically detectable goitres or thyroid nodules

According to the NICE report on the risks associated with thyroid dysfunction, most individuals with a non-malignant enlarged thyroid gland and normal thyroid function do not require treatment.

Experts Opinion

A basic thyroid function test helps determine if your thyroid is functioning normally, overactive, or underactive. The advanced test goes further by including inflammatory markers. In some cases, thyroid disorders may be linked to autoimmune conditions, where the immune system does not function properly. Autoimmune issues can sometimes be the underlying cause of thyroid disease.

FAQs

What is the normal range of a thyroid blood test?
The normal range for thyroid blood tests can vary depending on the specific test being performed. However, typical reference ranges are as follows: T4 levels generally fall between 4 and 11 micrograms per deciliter (mcg/dL), T3 levels range from 0.6 to 1.8 mcg/dL, and TSH levels are usually between 0.4 and 4.0 mIU/L.
How is an advanced thyroid test different from a regular thyroid test?
An advanced thyroid test measures the levels of both T3 and T4 hormones in your blood, helping to diagnose any thyroid condition and determine its specific type. In contrast, a standard thyroid test typically measures only one of these hormones, usually T4.
Where do I send my sample?
You will be provided with a free return label to send your health test samples back to our lab for analysis. Additionally, we will email you detailed instructions, including the return information for your sample.
What do I need to do before my test? i.e. fast, no drinking, etc

If fasting or limited alcohol intake is required before a blood test, we will provide personalized instructions via email once your order is placed. However, most tests can be taken without the need for fasting.

When will I get my results/how will I receive my results?
Results are typically processed within 2 to 3 working days. If a sample is submitted over the weekend (which we do not recommend), results will be available within 2 to 3 days from Monday. Once your results and personalized report are ready, you will receive an email notification to log in to the Welzo online platform to view them.
What does a full thyroid panel include?
A comprehensive thyroid panel includes tests for thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). These tests help diagnose thyroid conditions and determine the specific type of thyroid imbalance you may have.
How are thyroid levels checked?
The most common method for checking thyroid levels is through a blood test. Two primary tests used to diagnose thyroid issues are the thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) tests. The T4 test measures the amount of thyroxine in your blood, while the T3 test measures the amount of triiodothyronine.
Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) tests are also frequently used in thyroid diagnosis. TSH is a hormone produced by the pituitary gland that regulates the production of T3 and T4 by the thyroid.

Elevated TSH levels may indicate that the thyroid is underactive and not producing enough T3 and T4, a condition known as hypothyroidism. Conversely, low TSH levels may suggest that the thyroid is overproducing T3 and T4, which can signal hyperthyroidism.

In some cases, your doctor may recommend additional tests, such as a thyroid scan or thyroid antibody test, to further assess thyroid function.

What if my results show that I’m outside the normal range?

If your results fall outside the normal range and raise concern, it is important to contact your GP or emergency services immediately by calling 111 or 999. Please note: If you are feeling unwell or have health concerns, do not wait for your results. It is your responsibility to seek medical attention promptly.
