Biomarkers

Urea
Urea is a waste product excreted by the urinary system. After the body absorbs nutrients from food, complex proteins are broken down by cells, producing urea. This waste is then transported to the kidneys via the bloodstream.

In the kidneys, nephrons filter excess urea from the blood and convert it into a less concentrated mixture of urea, water, and other waste, which is excreted as urine.

Excessive urea in the blood, known as uremia, indicates impaired kidney function. This condition can be detected through a kidney blood test. If elevated urea levels are found, immediate medical attention is recommended.

Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate (eGFR)
Blood flowing into the kidneys is filtered by tiny structures called nephrons, which contain a network of blood vessels known as the glomerulus. The kidney blood test evaluates kidney function by measuring the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), which combines creatinine levels with factors such as age and gender.

The eGFR value provides insight into kidney health:

  • A value above 90 is considered normal.
  • A value below 60 suggests potential kidney dysfunction.
  • A value below 15 indicates severe kidney failure,
  • requiring immediate medical attention.
Creatinine
Creatinine is a waste product produced by the body as a result of muscle activity, particularly when muscles undergo significant strain. A portion of muscle creatine naturally breaks down into creatinine daily, especially during increased physical activity. Consuming high-protein foods can also elevate creatinine levels in the bloodstream.

Men typically have higher creatinine levels than women due to their greater muscle mass. A serum creatinine test, commonly part of a kidney function test, measures creatinine levels in the blood to assess kidney health. Normal creatinine levels are up to 1.2 mg/dL for women and 1.4 mg/dL for men. Elevated levels may indicate impaired kidney function, suggesting that blood purification is not occurring effectively.

Sodium
Sodium levels in the blood provide valuable insights into kidney function and hydration status, helping to determine whether daily water intake is adequate. The Kidney Blood Test measures sodium concentration, which can fluctuate throughout the day, typically peaking during daytime hours.

Both high and low sodium levels can contribute to kidney issues and symptoms such as nausea, loss of appetite, and fatigue. Elevated sodium levels may also result from consuming foods rich in sodium. Monitoring sodium levels is crucial for maintaining kidney health and overall well-being.

Information

Additional Information
A kidney blood test involves drawing a blood sample from a vein in your arm to check for abnormalities in kidney structure or function. This test is also referred to as a renal panel, renal function panel, or kidney profile.

Why It’s Done:
Your doctor may recommend a kidney blood test if you exhibit symptoms of a kidney problem, including:

  • Blood in your urine
  • Reduced urine output
  • Swelling in the hands, feet, or abdomen
  • High blood pressure
  • Unexplained fatigue
  • Persistent nausea or vomiting
  • Chest pain

Purpose of the Test:
The results can help your doctor assess the severity of any kidney issues and decide if treatment is necessary. Additionally, the test may help rule out other potential causes of your symptoms.

How to Prepare:
Fasting: You may need to fast for 12 hours before the test—no eating or drinking during this time.
Medications: Inform your doctor about any medications or supplements you are taking, as some may interfere with test results. You might need to temporarily stop certain medications before the test.
Key Points:
A kidney blood test is a simple, quick procedure that provides essential insights into your kidney health. If you have any questions or concerns about the test, speak with your doctor for guidance.

It is wiser to protect your kidneys before it is too late

Maintaining kidney health is essential for the proper functioning of multiple body systems. Regular kidney blood tests are beneficial as they provide valuable insights into the current state of your kidneys. These tests can help identify necessary lifestyle changes to support renal health and reduce the risk of developing chronic kidney disease over time.

%

of world population suffer from Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) across the globe
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) gradually reduces kidney function over time. Symptoms typically appear only in the later, more advanced stages of the condition.

%

of CKD cases are a result of diabetes and high blood pressure
Diabetes and high blood pressure are the leading causes of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD). High blood pressure is also closely associated with heart disease, the leading cause of death among individuals with kidney disease.
