A rapid lateral flow test for the detection of human occult blood in faeces is a simple yet highly effective diagnostic tool designed to aid in the early identification of gastrointestinal conditions. Occult blood refers to traces of blood in the stool that are not visible to the naked eye but may indicate underlying health issues.
This test works by detecting the presence of haemoglobin or its components in faecal matter, offering a non-invasive and convenient way to screen for potential gastrointestinal bleeding. Such bleeding can be caused by a variety of conditions, including colorectal cancer, polyps, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), ulcers, or haemorrhoids.
With quick and accurate results, the test provides critical insights that allow for timely diagnosis and medical intervention. Its rapid nature makes it suitable for both clinical settings and home use, empowering patients and healthcare providers to take proactive steps in managing digestive health.

Important information
This test utilizes a double antibody assay to detect faecal occult blood (FOB) at a concentration of 50 ng/ml or higher, equivalent to 6 μg/g of faeces. Unlike guaiac-based tests, this test’s accuracy is not influenced by the patient’s diet.Occult blood in the faeces (FOB) can be indicative of several gastrointestinal conditions. Some of the common causes of FOB include:
- Colon cancer
- Ulcers
- Polyps
- Colitis
- Diverticulitis
- Fissures
Many gastrointestinal issues may not present noticeable symptoms in the early stages, with occult blood being one of the first indicators. Early detection of conditions like bowel cancer can significantly improve treatment outcomes, with 9 out of 10 cases of bowel cancer being successfully treatable if identified early.

- Do not collect if you have bleeding haemorrhoids or blood in the urine, as these can affect test results.
-
Medications and Substances:
- Certain substances like alcohol, aspirin, and other medications taken in excess may cause gastrointestinal irritation, which could lead to occult bleeding. These should be discontinued at least 48 hours before testing to prevent inaccurate results.
-
Diet:
- No special dietary restrictions are required before taking the Bowel Health Test. However, following the instructions carefully will ensure accurate results.
Reading the results
- Positive Result:
- Two coloured lines appear.
- One line should appear in the control line region (C), and another line in the test line region (T).
- Note: The intensity of the test line (T) will vary based on the concentration of faecal occult blood. Any shade of colour in the test line region should be considered a positive result.
- Negative Result:
- One coloured line appears in the control line region (C).
- No line appears in the test line region (T).
- Invalid Result:
- The control line does not appear.
- This can be due to insufficient specimen volume or incorrect procedural techniques.
- Review the procedure, repeat the test, and if the problem persists, discontinue using the test kit and contact the distributor.
