Biomarkers

Total Cholesterol
Total cholesterol measures the overall amount of cholesterol in your blood, including both HDL (high-density lipoprotein) and LDL (low-density lipoprotein). Cholesterol is produced by the liver and plays a vital role in several bodily functions, including the production of vitamin D, bile, and the formation of cell membranes. It also helps transport fatty acids through the bloodstream. Total cholesterol levels can serve as a key indicator of your heart health, providing insights into potential risks for cardiovascular issues such as heart disease and heart attacks.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that plays a crucial role in numerous bodily functions. It is most commonly known for supporting healthy bones and teeth by enhancing the absorption of calcium and phosphorus from food. Additionally, Vitamin D is essential for immune system function, cell growth, neuromuscular functions, and reducing inflammation.

Unique in that it can be synthesized by the body through skin exposure to sunlight, specifically ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation, Vitamin D is also found in certain foods. However, factors such as living in areas with limited sunlight, spending more time indoors, or using sunscreen can contribute to insufficient Vitamin D levels. Dietary sources like fatty fish, cheese, egg yolks, and fortified foods (e.g., milk and cereals) can help, but it may be difficult to meet daily requirements through diet alone.

As a biomarker, Vitamin D is often assessed through a simple blood test, typically measuring the level of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) in the blood. This form of Vitamin D is the best indicator of your overall Vitamin D status.

Vitamin D deficiency is defined as a 25(OH)D level below 20 ng/ml (50 nmol/l), while insufficiency ranges from 20–29 ng/ml (50–74 nmol/l). Normal levels are considered to be above 30 ng/ml (75 nmol/l), though the optimal level may vary slightly depending on expert opinion.

Vitamin D Deficiency Can Lead to:

Bone Health Issues: Rickets in children (soft bones and skeletal deformities) and osteomalacia in adults (weak bones and muscle weakness).
Weakened Immune Function: Increased vulnerability to infections.
Chronic Diseases: Low Vitamin D levels may be linked to an increased risk of certain cancers, autoimmune diseases, neurological disorders, insulin resistance, and cardiovascular disease.
Home health tests for Vitamin D levels are especially important for individuals at higher risk, such as older adults, those with limited sun exposure, individuals with darker skin, and those with conditions that hinder the body’s ability to absorb or convert Vitamin D. It’s essential to consult a healthcare provider about your results, who can offer tailored advice and recommend treatment options if your Vitamin D levels are low.

HDL Cholesterol
HDL, or high-density lipoprotein, is commonly known as “good cholesterol” due to its crucial role in removing excess cholesterol from your bloodstream. HDL helps protect your heart and blood vessels by reducing inflammation, acting as an antioxidant, and transporting excess fat to the liver for processing. Maintaining optimal HDL levels is vital for heart health.

Our Welzo HDL test measures your HDL levels and provides valuable insights on how to improve them, empowering you to take proactive steps toward better cardiovascular health.

LDL Cholesterol
LDL, or low-density lipoprotein, plays a key role in transporting fats, including triglycerides, throughout the body. However, it is often referred to as “bad cholesterol” because elevated LDL levels can significantly increase the risk of cardiovascular issues, such as heart disease and heart attacks. High LDL can contribute to the buildup of fatty deposits in the artery walls, leading to a condition known as atherosclerosis, which narrows and hardens the arteries, restricting blood flow.
hs-CRP
To assess inflammation levels, we offer an advanced CRP evaluation. C-Reactive Protein (CRP) is a protein produced by the liver in response to inflammation, and its levels rise when there is inflammation in the body. While CRP is not specific to any one condition, it serves as a valuable biomarker for overall inflammation and is strongly linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, such as heart attacks and strokes.

Elevated CRP levels are also commonly found in individuals with chronic inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, as well as those who have recently experienced a heart attack or stroke. Monitoring CRP can provide important insights into your risk for cardiovascular issues and inflammation-related health concerns.

Cortisol (Stress Levels)
Cortisol is a steroid hormone produced by the adrenal glands, which are located above your kidneys. Often referred to as the “stress hormone,” cortisol is released in higher amounts during the body’s response to stress. However, it also plays a vital role in a wide range of physiological functions beyond stress management.

Cortisol is essential in the following areas of human health:

Stress Response: When you encounter stress, such as physical injury or emotional pressure, your brain signals the adrenal glands to release hormones, including cortisol and adrenaline. This surge prepares your body for a “fight or flight” response—adrenaline increases heart rate and blood pressure, while cortisol helps prioritize energy and restricts non-essential functions.

Metabolism Regulation: Cortisol helps regulate blood sugar levels and the metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. It ensures your body has a constant supply of energy by supporting the breakdown of these nutrients.

Inflammation Reduction: With its anti-inflammatory properties, cortisol plays a key role in reducing inflammation, making it vital for managing conditions like asthma and rheumatoid arthritis.

Blood Pressure and Cardiovascular Health: Cortisol helps maintain stable blood pressure and supports cardiovascular function, contributing to overall heart health.

Sleep/Wake Cycle: Cortisol follows a daily rhythm, peaking in the morning to help you wake up and gradually decreasing throughout the day, helping regulate your circadian rhythm.

While cortisol is necessary for these functions, maintaining a balance is crucial. Chronic high cortisol levels can lead to conditions like Cushing’s syndrome, while low levels can result in Addison’s disease.

As a biomarker, cortisol levels are often assessed to evaluate the body’s response to both acute and chronic stress, and to diagnose adrenal gland disorders. Cortisol can be measured using blood, saliva, or urine tests, providing valuable insight into your stress levels and overall health.

Triglycerides
Triglycerides are a type of blood fat that play a key role in the body’s energy storage and function. They are the primary way the body stores fat and can be converted into energy when needed. Triglycerides are produced in the liver and are essential for energy regulation. However, elevated triglyceride levels can increase the risk of cardiovascular issues, including heart disease.

Monitoring triglyceride levels is crucial when assessing overall cholesterol health, as high triglycerides often accompany high LDL (“bad”) cholesterol and low HDL (“good”) cholesterol, contributing to a higher risk of heart-related conditions.

Total Cholesterol: HDL %
The HDL percentage of total cholesterol calculates the proportion of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or “good cholesterol,” relative to your total cholesterol level. This biomarker is an important indicator of cardiovascular risk, as it compares the amount of HDL (protective cholesterol) to LDL (“bad” cholesterol) and total cholesterol in your blood. Medical professionals and heart disease risk calculators often use this percentage to assess your overall cardiovascular health and evaluate the balance between “good” and “bad” cholesterol in your system.
Non-HDL Cholesterol
In addition to measuring your HDL and LDL cholesterol levels, this test also includes a non-HDL cholesterol check. Non-HDL cholesterol encompasses all the “bad” cholesterol in your blood, including LDL, VLDL, and other harmful lipoproteins. It serves as a key indicator for assessing cardiovascular risk. Ideally, non-HDL cholesterol levels should be below 4mmol/L. By monitoring both HDL and LDL levels, you can track how changes in diet and lifestyle impact your cholesterol profile, helping you make informed decisions to optimize your heart health based on your biomarkers.
